  • Corporate Language: English
  • Hours: Not fixed - serving a global customer base and will be deliverable and deadline based

Why this role exists

Scientists spend a staggering amount of time wrangling data instead of running experiments. We build the AI-native platform that changes that: the system of record and the intelligence layer for R&D labs formulating everything from next-gen batteries to sustainable materials to alternative proteins. Our software doesn't just store lab data, it designs experiments, recommends formulations, surfaces insights, and automates the busywork that stands between a researcher and their next discovery.

The Sales Engineer is the technical and product conscience of the sales process. Before a customer ever says yes, you're the one who proves - with their science, their data, and their workflows - that Alchemy actually works. You earn the trust of the most skeptical people in the room: the bench chemists, materials scientists and technicians who've been burned by software before. And you do it AI-first, using our own skills and agents to move at a speed that itself becomes part of the pitch. When you've done your job well, the deal is technically de-risked, the scope is clear, and the Forward Deployed Engineer inherits a customer who already believes.

What you'll do

You'll own the technical arc of the pre-sales motion, end to end:

  • Discovery. Run technical, functional, and product discovery with technical directors, scientists, bench chemists and IT evaluators at some of the most demanding labs in the world. Go deep on their science, their workflows, and their real lab ops problems, asking the first-principles questions that surface what would make them enthusiastically switch vs. what would make them walk.
  • Demos, sandboxes, and pilots. Deliver the full scope of technical selling AI-first: stand up tailored tenants and sandboxes in hours, build demos that speak a customer's exact scientific language, and run pilots that turn "interesting" into "we can't go back." You'll co-create with subject matter experts on the customer side, using the most capable AI tooling available to go from a new software concept to a working sandbox or pilot in days, not months.
  • RFIs and product validation. Answer RFIs and technical questionnaires by leveraging our AI skills to draft fast and accurately, then coordinate the right internal Alchemy SMEs to review and sign off, so every response is both quick and airtight.
  • Scoping the land. Own the scope of the initial land. Use our scoping calculator to estimate the time, effort, and cost of a deployment, translate discovery into a credible plan, and hand a clean, well-scoped engagement to the Forward Deployed Engineer who will execute it.

You'll also be a tight feedback loop for the Product team. When you hit a gap that's costing deals, you'll characterize it precisely, weigh a demo workaround against a real product improvement, and make sure the pattern gets back to the people who can fix it for good.

Who you are

This is a rare combination, and that's the point. You bring deep scientific domain expertise and pair it expertly with the latest technology.

  • You have real depth in a scientific field chemistry, materials science, food science, chemical engineering or an adjacent R&D discipline, ideally at the bench. You understand how scientists actually work because you've been one.
  • You intimately know the legacy software scientists have been stuck with - paper lab notebooks, legacy ELN and LIMS, XLS, homegrown software - and all the weaknesses, gotchas and frustrations that have historically come with them. You can articulate exactly why Alchemy is different and better than alternatives.
  • You're genuinely technical and build with the frontier: you've worked hands-on with LLMs and agentic frameworks (prompt design, tool use, evals, feedback loops) and you have opinions about where they shine and where they don't. You can configure, integrate, and demo real solutions across the stack.
  • You're a natural in front of customers. You can run a technical discovery session, handle the hard objection, and make a scientist feel deeply understood — then translate all of it into a scope a buyer will sign.
  • You're energized by ambiguity and speed, and would rather ship a compelling POC and iterate than wait for the perfect product feature.

The magic is in the intersection: someone who can talk experimental design with a materials scientist in the morning, spin up an AI-powered demo of their exact workflow by lunch, and scope the deployment that afternoon.

Why this is the frontier

This is genuinely as close to the leading edge of the technology industry as you can get. AI is rewriting what software can do. Applying AI to real scientific R&D, where the stakes are discovery itself, is one of the most consequential places to be doing that work. You won't be reading about what's coming, you'll be demonstrating it, using tooling that didn't exist last year to win over the chemists and scientists who will define whether it succeeds.

Your work is visible and high-impact from day one. Every deal you technically de-risk has the potential to become a happy Alchemy customer. Nothing moves the needle like a new logo. You'll help build what AI-first sales engineering looks like at a company inventing the category. And you'll be surrounded by people — Sales, Customer Success, Product, and Engineering — rowing hard in the same direction toward the same goal: making researchers dramatically more productive.

If you want to sit at the intersection of deep science and frontier AI, proving what's possible to the people who'll live in it every day, we'd love to talk.
